The total weight or volume of what's moving, the distance, and access at both ends decide most of the price: stairs, elevators, long carries from the truck to the door, parking restrictions. Your date matters too. Month-end and summer weekends book first and cost the most, so a flexible date is worth real money.
Insist on a real walkthrough
An estimate given over the phone from a rough item list is a guess. A video or in-home survey gets you a number that holds up. Ask the company whether the quote is binding, non-binding, or binding not-to-exceed, and get it in writing before a truck is put on the calendar.
Know what happens if something breaks

How far ahead should I book?
Four to six weeks works for most moves. Month-end and summer dates fill first, so booking early gets you better crews and better pricing.
Do I need to be there on moving day?
Someone should be present at both the old and new address to direct the crew and sign the inventory sheet when the truck arrives and again at delivery.
Will they pack the kitchen too?
Yes, that's part of a standard full-service job, closets included. You can also ask for partial packing, where the crew only wraps fragile items and you handle the rest.
What won't the crew load onto the truck?
Flammables, propane tanks, paint and ammunition are off-limits on most trucks. Movers also tell you to carry documents, medication and jewelry yourself rather than box them.
