Systems worth upgrading while it is open
Once walls are open, adding circuits, improving HVAC distribution to the basement, or replacing aging plumbing is far cheaper than it will ever be again. Ask your contractor what they would do now to avoid opening the same wall later.

- In most jurisdictions, yes, because the work involves framing, electrical and often plumbing and egress. Requirements vary, so confirm with your local building department before starting.
- What if the basement has been dry for years?
- That is a good sign but not a guarantee, since conditions change with grading, gutters and unusual weather. Verify drainage and slab moisture before covering anything, because the cost of being wrong is the whole finished assembly.
