Demand is highest in the summer, at the end of each month and on weekends, because leases and closings cluster there. Moving midweek, mid month and outside peak season generally means more choice of crews and dates. Winter moves are cheaper to schedule but bring weather risk that has to be planned for.

Key points

  • Flexibility is the discount. A fixed weekend date at month end is the premium.
  • Book earlier for a peak date, not later.
  • A winter move needs a weather plan, not a hope.

What actually drives demand

  • Leases and home closings that end on the last day of a month
  • Summer school breaks and relocation season
  • Weekends, when most households can take the day
  • Holiday weekends, which compress an already busy calendar

Trade offs by season

Summer offers long daylight and dry conditions, with the least availability. Autumn and spring are a reasonable middle. Winter has the widest choice of crews, and also ice, early darkness and the need to protect floors from salt and slush.

Costs vary based on location, project size, materials, complexity, access and the provider you hire.

Choosing your date

  • Ask each company which dates are genuinely open, not just whether they can do it
  • Offer a two or three day window if your schedule allows
  • Avoid the first and last two days of a month where possible
  • Confirm the arrival window in writing, not just the date
