Moving checklist and timeline
A week by week moving plan, from the first quotes to the final walkthrough, so nothing important lands on moving day itself.

Work backwards from the move date. Eight weeks out, gather quotes and set a budget. Six weeks out, start purging and collecting supplies. Four weeks out, book the mover and file address changes. Two weeks out, confirm utilities and start packing rooms you barely use. The final week is clothing, kitchen, cleaning and a small essentials box that travels with you.
Key points
- Booking early buys choice. Booking late buys whatever is left.
- Utilities and address changes fail quietly, so confirm them in writing.
- Anything you do in week one is one less thing to do at seven in the morning on moving day.
Eight to six weeks out
- Collect written quotes and compare what each one actually includes
- Decide what you are moving and what is leaving the house
- Start a folder for quotes, inventory notes and receipts
- Measure large furniture against doorways at the new address
Four to two weeks out
- Book the mover and get the confirmed date and arrival window in writing
- Schedule utility transfers, including the shutoff date at the old address
- File a change of address and update banks, insurance and subscriptions
- Pack storage, seasonal items, books and anything decorative
Ready to compare movers?
Get moving quotesThe final week and moving day
- Pack an essentials box that rides in your own vehicle
- Defrost the freezer, empty the fridge and drain anything with fuel in it
- Confirm parking or elevator access at both ends
- Do a final walkthrough of every closet, cabinet and crawlspace
Common questions
- How early should I book a mover?
- Earlier is better, and availability tightens sharply at the end of a month and through the summer. If your date is fixed, treat booking as a four to eight week task rather than a two week one.
- What belongs in the essentials box?
- Medication, chargers, basic tools, toiletries, a change of clothes per person, paperwork, and anything you would not want to search for at midnight.
